Advice And Guidance

This part of the site has been designed to give you some basic information on the choices available after Year 11. The site aims to get you thinking about your future plans.

Options post 16

Whatever you choose, it’s important to carry on learning. This can be your route to;

  • Getting a better job
  • Improving your job prospects
  • Earning more money in the future

Your options include;

  • Stay in full-time learning (either at college or school sixth form)
  • Or enter a job, preferably with training to help you progress
  • Or enter work based learning, such as doing an apprenticeship
  • Or start your own business and be the next Alan Sugar or Michelle Mone!

What happened to Year 11 students from last year?*

Most students decided to stay in some form of full-time learning either at college or in a school sixth form – this made up 68.4% of the year group.

Those that decided that work based learning or employment was for them made up 17.9% of the year group.

Those that were ‘not settled’ or ‘not available’ were 11.2% of the year group. This included young people who might be young carers or have other issues affecting them being able to work.

The ones not settled are still looking for opportunities post-16. Make sure you have a plan and a back-up so you have a good start after Year 11.

A small number of young people moved away or did not participate in the follow up activity – this made up 2.5% of the year group.

People are working closely together to provide courses and opportunities for learners – so you could stay in a school sixth form but still spend some time at college or at a training provider.

Whatever motivates you to start your working career, don’t forget to keep your options open. Make sure you look for opportunities that will guarantee you training and progression. Don’t get stuck in a dead end job when there are so many possibilities.

Your Tutor, Connexions Personal Adviser and Careers Coordinator are available to help you develop your ideas further and provide more detail about your specific choices. Make sure you use their expertise to make sure you get the best possible start to your career.

Look at the web links to help you decide about the range of opportunities there are open to you after Year 11. Use your careers library in school and make sure you know who your PA is and where your local Connexions centre is.

Personal Advisers (known as PA’s) are funded through the Connexions service. Connexions is a national service that provides staff and information to support young people with their careers decisions, but also helps with a range of other issues like health, money and housing.
If you want information, advice and guidance to help you plan your future then speak to your Personal Adviser (PA) in your school, college, local community or at your local Connexions centre.

A PA can help you;

  • Plan your future and look at how you can achieve your goals and plan your next steps
  • Develop as a person through activities like sport or volunteering (see Getting Involved section)
  • Make the most of your abilities and overcome any difficulties, issues concerns you may have such as about money or health.
